DaveC’s Tech Tips #2: Bad Video Hosts?

Why do people upload their videos to websites that have a bad service?

 

It happens a lot in QSS Chat that people come to bitch about which host a certain video is uploaded to. Megavideo’s stupid timelimit, Youku’s slow speed, Vioku’s stupid ads, and a lot of different reasons to dislike that particular host which the video you want to see is located on.

 

 

“I’m Just Not Happy”

 

First of all I’d like to say that we should respect the decisions of the uploaders. They were kind enough to obtain, upload and link the videos when they could’ve just as well decided to keep it for themselves.

 

When somebody uploads a video, several things need to be taken into account. How good does the host allow you to upload the video, how fast do they remove copyrighted content, does the quality remain intact, and probably even more such factors.

 

A lot of the sites often considered bad are good for uploaders, for example because the copyrighted content stays online there for a long time, or they have a good upload interface.

 

Whatever the reasons may be for that particular choice, it is their choice, we can only try to positively influence it. Just keep in mind that they go through a lot of effort to upload it for us, so we should be so grateful as to express a thank you; that is all they ask from us.

 

 

Up Your Load

 

One other question I want to address is what everyone can do to help QSS. What we could use most are links contributors. I will go more in depth on the subject of uploading, in a future edition of Tech Tips. In the mean time, there are lots of other ways to contribute to the community, link-hunting for example.

 

Link-hunting is the art of searching for series and/or movies that have been uploaded, but not yet posted on QSS. It IS, together with uploading, the best way to contribute to QSS.

 

Other smaller ways of contributing are reporting dead links to moderators, or using your talent to help other members. If you are good with art, then you could help by making signatures (see some members’ Sig Shops in Creativity and Artwork for examples) or

avatars. Are you good with writing? Entertain us with some of your work! Good with computers, check out the Help section and contribute to solving problems. Even if you are a real paranoid conspiracy theorist, then QSS Underground is your section.

 

 

Hints and Tips

 

-If you dislike a specific site, try to find the same video on another one. If you can’t find it elsewhere, and you really must ask for a re-upload, please ask nicely, don’t demand it. Otherwise you might be told to go buy it and take a hike.

-If the video is on a bad site, do others a favour, download it from that site or via a torrent, and re-upload it to a better site. There are those who bitch, and there are those who do…

-The best way to get people to help find videos for you is by asking nicely, and saying thank you afterwards.
