Edito-Blog: Ads on the Forum

I guess it’s human nature to take things for granted. When we’ve been enjoying something for a little too long we tend to forget that someone had to pay for it, to create it, to get it to us. AND if it’s completely free of charge, then woa - let the abuse begin! Kinda like that mofo who keeps parking his car on my front lawn; If I did it to him, I’d probably get sued for ruining his dandelions, but on MY lawn, which costs him nothing to maintain, well, how DARE I put up a fence!!!
Our resident Tech Pofessor DaveC also got fed up recently of seeing people posting complaints and rants about the forum’s ads. Dave felt that somebody should remind our community, which is free of charge for all of us to use, WHY there are such ads. Here’s Dave, in his own words.
Hey guys, a blogpost before the third one here. Because of a recent post in GD, I wanted to explain why ads are on a site.
A website costs money; You have to pay for the domainname, (QSS has about three I believe: QSSblog.net, quicksilverscreen.com and qsssearch.com), and for the server (essentially a computer without monitor/keyboard/mouse that’s turned on 24/7). For a website like QSS which doesn’t earn money by selling a product or a service, it’s like a black hole in which a lot of money disappears. The only way to get some of the expenses back is by serving advertisements. For every ad, QSS gets a small amount of money, abd thus the forum we all enjoy is paid for.
The ads are thus there for a great reason. Eventhough a lot of you people dislike them. They aren’t going anywhere, unless ofcourse, you want us to make QSS a paid service (which is not going to happen) or by paying the servers for us (which again is very unlikely).
So please, enough complaints about the ads!
Of course no Tech Tips without some Hints and Tips :
-Try to help the site out a bit, by clicking the ads BUT DON’T TYPE IN ANYTHING, AND DON’T DOWNLOAD A THING
-NEVER EVER DOWNLOAD SOMETHING FROM ADS, OR ENTER IN PERSONAL DETAILS LIKE NAMES, CREDIT-CARD DETAILS, E-MAIL ADDRESSES
-If you really must, disable the ads by using the firefox-plugin adblock plus
“The most common trouble with advertising is that it tries too hard to impress people.” - James Randolph Adams
-DaveC
Lost of people will react in a First Amendment way to this, I’m pretty sure. Some will even argue that they very politely and righteously raised the subject and do not deserve to be retaliated against by an editorial on the blog. I say whatever words you use, a complaint is a complaint, and in this case DaveC is right – it’s a complaint that’s been raised too many times and every time was completely unfair to QSS.
It is indeed annoying for people who don’t already know that ads are bad for your virtual health to get shafted by one. However there ARE warnings and explanations on the forum, and we can’t expect money to start growing on tree just to make sure no one will ever click on a ad in QSS ever again.
Ads ARE annoying and harmful to computers, but they pay the rent and they’re harmless if you ignore them, as should we ANY ad on the net. And Thupmer’s Wrestling Zone. Kidding Thumps… (am I…)

thanks for shedding some light on one of QSS’s most bashing topics to date, it seems that everyone would really love to see a ad free succesful forum, but as some of us know, that is impossible. especially with a site as big as QSS is.
