THE DARK ROOM vol.5: You Never Know What You Gonna Get…

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a great weekend. This week I am going over independent films that have been commented on quite a bit here on QSS. But even so, I know some of you may not have seen them and these movies are definitely worth the watch. Now enter with me into The Dark Room.
1st: Boy A (2007)

Now this movie I said I was going to write an article about because people should watch. It is such an amazing film that really should have earned a lot of recognition.
The film starts off following a guy named Jack whom we instantly find out has been in big trouble, given that his parole officer (and father figure), Terry, has given him a new identity (which is Jack). The movie is told through a series of flashbacks mixed with the present. The flashbacks show Jack when he was younger, alongside his older brother, and slowly lay out what happened in Jack’s past that sent him to prison.
So Jack is out of jail and has a new identity, his next step is to start a life. This is where the movie takes on a nice coming-of-age theme. Since the kid was in jail most of his life, you now get to see how he adjusts to the outside world. He gets a job, he becomes good friends with a guy at work, and he falls for a girl who also works with him. All is well, but not all things can stay hidden. His secret gets revealed and he does not know how it happened or by who.
This movie is just nothing short of good. Filled with mystery and suspense, it keeps you intrigued as you want to know what Jack and his brother did, you want to know who found out about it and you want to know what is going to happen to him. I absolutely love British cinema and this movie has got to be one of my favorites. There is really nothing more I should say, I urge you to enjoy

2nd: Chocolat (2000)

This is such a sweet little movie. It is full of wonderful actors and actresses, for instance two among my favorites, Juliette Binoche and (my imaginary husband) Johnny Depp. It is funny, dramatic, and just all around, a good movie.
Chocolat follows a womanm Vianne (Binoche), and her daughter after they move to a small town in France. Vianne opens up a chocolate shop there that soon becomes the talk of the town. But not everyone is a fan of her rising popularity. Vianne is quickly taken on by the town’s mayor (Alfred Molina) who wants to close her shop which goes against every principle of religion and moality long withheld in the village by his family.
Now even though there are some that don’t like her growing chocolate business, her lovable personality becomes infectious towards the townspeople. She then becomes friends with a woman named Josephine who is running away from her abusive husband. With this growing friendship and the shop, all things are going good even though some are against them. Vianne then meets a group of drifters, one of which Vianne takes a liking to (Depp) and this sends some of the already opposing townspeople into more dismay. See how it all unravels.
This is a good movie but it is not for everyone. Not everyone enjoys simple romantic little gems, I am not much for it either, but I did like THIS movie. It is well acted and full of faces that we know and love. You wonder whether the mayor and his followers will ever accept Vianne and her chocolate lovers and if she will keep her shop. It is worth a watch in my opinion. Enjoy.

3rd: My Life Without Me (2003)

This one’s another movie I discovered late at night while watching IFC. I did not know what to expect from it of course, but soon realized that it was a nice and refreshing story. It raises the question: What would you do if you knew you were going to die? Here is how it starts.
Ann is a 23 year old mother who lives in a trailer in her mother’s backyard, with her husband and two little girls. She works as a janitor in a school and her husband is a builder. They live a simple, happy little life. One day though, Ann does not feel that well and she thinks she may be pregnant again. She goes to the hospital and her news is not what she was expecting it to be. She finds out she has terminal cancer, which gives her only two more months to live.
After finding out though, Ann does not break the news to anyone, especially her husband and kids. And since she knows there is no way out of her situation, she decides to make a list of things to do within her final months. This list includes making tapes for her daughters up until they are eighteen, about life and growing up. She also wants to know what it is like to be with another man besides her husband (the only man she has ever been with), and wants to try and find her husband a new wife.
This movie was just very beautiful, with a truly touching story and great acting. It is filled with all sorts of emotions, as you can tell. So what will come of Ann? Watch the film and find out.

So hope you all enjoy the films, please tell me what you think of any of them. Watch them before or after pissing your pants from The Hangover (watched it yesterday and it will definitely be a classic). So enjoy and see you again here at The Dark Room.
